There is something so nostalgic about the thought of "opening" up a summer house. Do people even still say that? Being from a movie loving family, I instantly think of the scene in "On Golden Pond" when Katharine Hepburn and Henry Fonda arrive at their New England pond side cabin in the Spring. They enter the house to find all of the furniture covered in white sheets, protecting it from the settling dust over the long winter. A similar scene in "Mystic Pizza" when Charlie brings Daisy to his parent's summer estate, off-season, again all the furniture covered in creamy, candlelit sheets. There is something so cathartic about the thought of stripping the dusty sheets to expose fresh yet familiar furniture, ready for summer. We visit our house on the Cape "off-season" as it is our occasional refuge from reality, so we don't exercise this ritual, but in a week we will venture down, pull out the outdoor umbrellas, cushions and planters that will soon be filled with lush plants. This will be our version of pulling the sheets off.
Last Saturday the thermometer flirted with eighty degrees, the sun warmed my face and encouraged the bulbs to burst from their beds. Soon the vaccine will be available to all that want to take it. I am currently making headbands and sunglass cases from the fabric I had purchased to make masks for the store. Hopefully they will soon replace their cousins at the bottoms of handbags and beach totes. Babies will be born and wedding dates set. There will be first dates, with first kisses where you can feel the softness of your date's lips for the first time. Lots of firsts await all of us in one form or another.
Our puppy Halyard will be introduced to the ocean for the first time and old friends that I convinced to move to the Cape (sight unseen have you) will spend their first Summer here. And hopefully, fingers crossed, I will open my first store. It is my hope that all of your firsts this Spring and Summer become memories worthing of sharing over and over.
